Gouri's Story
From being a care-free adult to being a responsible pet parent
From childhood, my love for animals, especially dogs, has held a special place in my heart. So, it was no surprise that when I entered university, I longed for a furry companion. Call it destiny or wilful intervention but in just a few days I got a call, stepping in for someone who couldn’t care for the little one the way he deserved That’s when Dobby, my little furry angel, came into my life.
When I first brought him home, he was only 28 days old in the dead of winters and terribly unwell. He was suffering from acute dysentery and needed immediate medical attention. I was a first-time pet parent and had no idea how to care for a sick pup, but I knew that I had to do whatever it takes to make him well again. The first few weeks were incredibly tough, as I spent most of my time taking care of him. I even doubted my own abilities to take care of him. I had to make a makeshift bed for him since I didn’t have one yet. For the first week, he was pooping every couple of hours and as he was not trained he did it where he felt right. I used to wake up every 2 hours in the night to check on him and clean after him. It was a difficult time. But he got better and more playful.
I never once regretted my decision. Becoming Dobby’s mom at 20 transformed me into a more responsible person. Despite his delicate health, my love for him only grew stronger. I keep praying for his well-being, hoping for a healthier life.
As a child from an army family, I grew up loving meat. But since adopting Dobby, I have given up on this one favourite thing and turned vegetarian. Some people have asked me if it’s hard or tempting, but to me, it’s just a way to reciprocate my love towards my furry companion. Though we are different in nature, our bond is beyond that of a typical pet and owner. Dobby is not just a pet but my baby.
Our journey together has taught me selflessness, empathy, and unconditional love not just towards dogs but towards every animal. More so than humans I must say. He has forever changed my life; “I now understand the true meaning of relationships!!”
