Shreya’s Story
Finding Serenity in the Chaos
Pets love you more than you love yourself. We’ve all stumbled upon this line in some way or another. But this line hits differently after you become a pet parent. I’ve always wanted to be a pet parent since childhood. But the fast pace of life, financial restraints, and fear of taking responsibilities have stopped me from taking the plunge. Until last year, when I decided to just go for it and let life take its course. And I can never thank the universe enough for helping me take the decision, as there was no looking back from there.
I still remember the first day when he came to my house. A timid fluffy ball with a tiny ponytail and two most illuminated eyes I had ever seen. He was scared, confused, and overwhelmed, just like me. But somewhere, I knew we would be best companions by the way he looked at me every time I called him Ricky (my own pet name). Yes, we are each other’s namesake. We Bengalis usually have two names, but as we grow up, the pet names slowly vanish in the journey to establish our good names. I somehow wanted to live my childhood days vicariously through him and he has been so accommodating to that.
The initial days were a little tough, be it the pee-potty training, understanding his dietary needs, grooming him, or making him familiar with the environment around. But now, when I look back at those days, I feel it was more than him. It was my training to be an efficient pet mom.
From grumpy mornings to early morning walks, from ordering outside to cooking healthy meals for both of us, from sleepless lonely nights to cuddling each other to sleep, life has truly changed for the better. I still remember a day when I was stressed at work and had a very bad meltdown. I was blankly looking at the screen, and tears were rolling down. Then I saw Ricky jump to the bed, close the laptop screen with his paws, hop onto my lap, and started licking my face. That’s when I remembered the words, pets truly love you more than you love yourself.
He is really turning me into a better human bit by bit every day. The girl who had once lost all meaning of life has started giving herself a second chance, all thanks to Ricky. I have started to lead a healthier life, manage my finances well, and save up for the future, so I can give Ricky a good life ahead. From being scared of responsibilities to being proud to be called Ricky’s mom, we have both come a long way.
Having said that, there are some rough days as well, especially if you are a single dog parent living all by yourself. From missing weekend parties to taking your pet to the hospital all alone in the wee hours of the night or managing him all by yourself even when you fall sick. But the love and affection they shower upon you compensates for all the little hassles. They make you emotionally independent and make you feel that you are one of the best souls on earth. And trust me, in this world of speed dating and fast-paced life, your pet creates an oasis of love and serenity that keeps you grounded, happy, and spreads the vibe of a loving home.
