You leave the house for 20 minutes.
You come back and suddenly there is chaos.
The cushion is destroyed. The slippers are gone. Your pet is acting like you have been missing for 14 years.
Cute? Slightly.
Concerning? Also yes.
A lot of pets miss their humans when they leave. But if your dog or cat gets extremely stressed every single time you go out, it could be separation anxiety.
1. They Panic the Second You Leave
If your pet starts barking, crying, pacing or scratching at the door the moment you leave, that is usually the biggest sign.
This is not your pet being “dramatic.” Although, to be fair, they are being a little dramatic.
They are genuinely stressed because they do not know when you are coming back.
2. They Destroy Things
Shoes. Cushions. Furniture. The one thing you actually cared about.
Pets with separation anxiety often chew, scratch or destroy things while you are gone because they are anxious and trying to cope.
Unfortunately, your favourite charger cable tends to suffer for it.
3. They Follow You Everywhere
Bathroom? They are there.
Kitchen? Also there.
You stand up for two seconds and suddenly your pet is acting like your unpaid assistant.
A clingy pet is not always a sign of separation anxiety. Some pets are just obsessed with you.
But if they seem stressed every time you move away from them, it could be more than just affection.
4. They Act Different When You Get Ready to Leave
Some pets know the signs.
You pick up your keys, wear shoes or grab your bag and suddenly they look personally betrayed.
If your pet starts whining, hiding, pacing or sticking to you extra closely before you even leave, they may already be anxious.
5. They Have Accidents Indoors
Even fully trained pets can have accidents when they are stressed.
So if your dog or cat only pees, poops or throws up when left alone, it might not be a training issue.
It might be anxiety.
6. They Stop Eating When You Are Gone
Some pets with separation anxiety will not eat or drink while they are alone.
Then the second you come back, suddenly they are completely fine again.
Which is sweet in a slightly emotionally exhausting way.
7. They Lose Their Mind When You Come Home
Every pet gets excited when their favourite person comes back.
But if your pet reacts like you returned from a three-year expedition every single time, it can sometimes mean they were very stressed while you were away.
Running. Crying. Zoomies. Full emotional breakdown.
When Should You Worry?
A little clinginess is normal.
But if your pet is constantly stressed, destructive or unable to stay calm when alone, it is worth paying attention to.
Because separation anxiety can get worse over time if it is ignored.
Finally
Your pet is not being naughty, stubborn or “too attached.”
They are anxious.
And honestly, if your favourite person disappeared every day and you had no idea when they were coming back, you would probably be upset too.
The good news? With patience, routine and the right support, separation anxiety can get a lot better.
