Ever looked at your dog and thought, do you actually love me or am I just your personal chef?
Good news: dogs are obsessed with the people they love. They just show it in weird little ways.
1. They Wait for You
Have you ever moved from one room to another and suddenly there they are, like a tiny furry shadow.
Bathroom. Kitchen. Bedroom. Suddenly they are there.
Dogs stay close to the people they love. You make them feel safe, so they want to know where you are and what you are doing at all times.
Yes, even if what you are doing is absolutely nothing.
2. They Stare at You
Not the “give me your food” stare.
The soft, calm stare where they look at you for no reason at all.
Dogs do not hold eye contact with people they do not trust. So when your dog looks at you like that, it means they feel safe with you.
There is actual science behind it too. When dogs and humans make loving eye contact, both release oxytocin , the same “love hormone” connected to bonding.
3. They Bring You Their Toys
Every dog has that one toy.
The gross tennis ball. The half-destroyed stuffed animal. The squeaky toy that somehow still works.
If your dog brings it to you, that is a big deal.
4. They Sleep Near You
Dogs are most vulnerable when they are asleep.
If your dog chooses to sleep next to you instead of literally anywhere else in the house, it means they trust you.
Even if they sleep horizontally and leave you 3 cm of bed.
You are where they feel safest.
5. They Lick You
Dog kisses are not always cute. Sometimes it is a little lick on your hand. Sometimes it is an aggressive face wash when you least expect it.
But licking is one of the most common ways dogs show affection. Puppies lick their mums and littermates, so many dogs carry that habit into adulthood.
If your dog licks you when you are upset, stressed or crying, they may even be trying to comfort you.
6. They Get Excited When You Come Home
You leave the house for 10 minutes and your dog reacts like you have returned from a three-year expedition.
The tail starts wagging. They start spinning. Maybe they grab a toy or run around the house because they physically cannot contain how happy they are.
That excitement is real.
To your dog, you are one of the best parts of their day.
7. They Listen to You
Okay, maybe not when there is a squirrel.
But if your dog pays attention when you speak, comes when you call them or looks to you for reassurance, it is a sign of a strong bond.
Dogs listen most closely to the people they trust.
8. They Lean on You
You are standing there minding your own business and suddenly your dog is leaning their entire body weight against you.
As inconvenient as it may be, it is actually really sweet.
Dogs lean on people when they want comfort, closeness or reassurance. If your dog does this often, it means they see you as their safe place.
9. They Copy You
Have you ever yawned and your dog yawned right after?
Or noticed that when you are excited, they get excited too , and when you are sad, they suddenly become calm and cuddly?
Dogs often mirror the people they love. It is their way of staying connected to you and understanding how you feel.
- They Wag Their Tail Around You
A wagging tail does not always mean the same thing.
But if your dog sees you and suddenly their entire body starts wagging, that is love.
Some dogs even do what people call a “helicopter tail,” where the tail wags so hard it looks like it is spinning in circles.
11. They Sniff Your Things
Ever caught your dog sleeping on your hoodie or stealing your sock?
As strange as it seems, your scent comforts them.
Dogs use smell to recognise the people they love. That is why they are drawn to your clothes, your blanket or wherever you have been sitting. It helps them feel close to you even when you are not there.
12. They Show You Their Belly
A dog showing you their belly is one of the biggest signs of trust.
Their stomach is a vulnerable area, so if your dog flops over dramatically and waits for belly rubs, it means they feel completely safe around you.
Basically, they trust you with their whole heart… and they also want scratches immediately.
13. They Smile at You
Yes, dogs can smile.
You know that relaxed, happy expression they get when their mouth is slightly open and they look completely content?
That is often their version of a smile.
When your dog looks at you like that, it usually means they are happy, relaxed and enjoying being around you.
14. They Give You the Puppy Eyes
Those big, dramatic puppy eyes are not just your imagination.
Dogs have actually learned over time to use their eyebrows and facial expressions to communicate with humans.
So when your dog raises their eyebrows or gives you that look that makes you want to cancel all your plans and cuddle them forever, they are trying to connect with you.
15. They Get Jealous
Does your dog suddenly push between you and someone else when you are giving attention to another pet?
Do they act dramatically offended when you are cuddling literally anything that is not them?
A little bit of jealousy can actually be a sign that your dog loves you and wants your attention.
Of course, too much jealousy can become a problem, but a little “um excuse me, that is my human” energy is pretty common.
Finally
Dogs may not be able to say “I love you” out loud, but they spend every single day showing you.
In the way they wait for you. In the way they curl up next to you. In the way they look at you like you are the most important person in the world.
So the next time your dog follows you to the bathroom, steals your spot on the bed or drops a slobbery toy into your lap, remember:
That is not just dog behaviour.
That is love.
