how to care for teething puppy

Congratulations on becoming a puppy parent! Your adorable new family member is sure to bring you endless joy and few challenges too, especially during the teething and nipping phase.

If your little one is constantly chewing slippers, furniture, or even your fingers,  don’t worry it’s completely normal! Every puppy goes through it, and with a little patience, you can guide them through this stage smoothly.

When Do Puppies Start Teething?

Puppies get their baby teeth as early as 2–3 weeks old, and by the time they’re 3–4 months old, these teeth start falling out to make way for their adult set of 42 teeth (that’s 10 more than humans!).

This period can be painful for your puppy, their gums may feel sore or itchy. You might notice them drooling more, biting random objects, or leaving tiny blood spots on toys.
Don’t panic  that’s all part of the process. But if the bleeding or drooling seems excessive, consult your vet.

By 6 months, most Indian breeds and mixes from Indies to Labradors and Golden Retrievers have their full adult teeth.

How to Help Your Puppy Through Teething?

Teething can be uncomfortable, so as a pet parent your job is to help your pup chew safely. If you don’t, they’ll find something on their own  probably your shoes or sofa!

Safe Teething Relief Options :

  • Frozen carrot sticks or cucumber slices — soothing and safe to chew.

  • Rubber chew toys – brands like KONG are available online and in pet stores.

  • Frozen washcloth — dip in water, freeze, and offer for short chew sessions.

  • Coconut oil — apply a tiny bit on chew toys to make them more interesting and it’s safe for dogs.

Always supervise chewing and make sure the toy or food isn’t small enough to swallow or break into sharp pieces. Avoid sticks, bones, or anything that can splinter.

How to Stop Puppy Nipping?

Puppies nip to play, explore, or relieve teething discomfort. But it’s important to teach them that human skin isn’t a chew toy!

Here’s how you can train them gently:

  1. Yelp like a puppy: When they bite too hard, say a loud “Ouch!” or “No!” in a high-pitched tone.  This mimics how puppies correct each other.

  2. Redirect: Offer a chew toy immediately after.

  3. Stop play if needed: If biting continues, quietly stop playing and walk away. They’ll learn that nipping ends the fun.

  4. Use positive reinforcement: Reward calm, gentle behavior with treats and praise.

Keep chew toys handy  especially during playtime, so you can swap fingers for toys in seconds.

If your pup seems to bite aggressively , it’s best to consult a certified dog trainer or vet for guidance.
